During the May/June sitting, the Committee was referred Bill 52: Elevators and Lifts Act for consideration. The reporting date for this Bill is September 28, 2022. A plain language summary can be found here.
It also reported Bill 46: An Act to Amend the Motor Vehicles Act back to the House; this Bill received assent by the Commissioner.
On June 6th, the Committee travelled to Whatı̀ and met with Chief and Council as well as held a public meeting with 35 attendees on the topic of the Tłı̨chǫ Highway. Members were pleased to speak with Whatı̀ residents and learn their needs regarding the impacts the road’s opening has had on the community. The Committee looks forward to following up with the appropriate GNWT Departments to ensure Whatı̀ is adequately supported through this change from being a fly-in community to one that is accessible by road year round.
On May 13, Committee toured the Yellowknife Solid Waste Facility, and on June 30th, they will receive a surface and underground tour of Giant Mine. These site visits will help inform the Committee’s priority work on remediation economy in the Northwest Territories.
