The Standing Committee on Rules and Procedures inquires into matters referred to it by the Legislative Assembly, the Honourable Speaker, or the Board of Management. The committee will also:
- Review the reports of the Chief Electoral Officer on the conduct of elections, plebiscites, or votes conducted in the Northwest Territories in accordance with statute;
- Review, as necessary or appropriate, the annual and other reports of the Integrity Commissioner;
- Review and make recommendations on the implications and impacts that the implementation of self-government agreements will have on the powers, structures and procedures of the Legislative Assembly; and
- Review and make recommendations relating to the Code of Conduct for Members of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly
The Standing Committee on Rules and Procedures was established by the 19th Legislative Assembly on December 10, 2019. Mr. O'Reilly, the MLA for Frame Lake was elected as Chair of the Committee on December 11, 2019. Mr. Simpson, the MLA for Hay River South was elected as the Deputy Chair on the same date. On June 1, 2021 Mr. O'Reilly resigned as Chair, and Mr. Jacobson was selected as the new Chair. Unlike the other Standing Committees of the Assembly, Rules and Procedures includes members of the Executive Council as members of the Committee.
