The Special Committee is focused on encouraging discussions and producing recommendations in relation to Aboriginal Rights negotiations and reconciliation with the Northwest Territories’ Indigenous Peoples. Responsible to the Legislative Assembly, the Special Committee will table a final report by the end of the 19th Assembly.
The Special Committee on Reconciliation and Indigenous Affairs was formally created on October 29th, 2020, by a motion of the Legislative Assembly. On December 4th, 2020, the Committee selected Ms. Lesa Semmler as Chair of the Special Committee and Mr. Rylund Johnson as the Deputy Chair.
The purpose, scope of work, and membership of the Special Committee is set out in the Terms of Reference.
This Special Committee advances two priorities of the 19th Legislative Assembly: Settle and implement treaty, land, resources, and self-government agreements; and implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
