The Standing Committee on Social Development, chaired by Ms. Caitlin Cleveland, will hold a public clause-by-clause review of Bill 20: An Act to Amend the Employment Standards Act on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 12:00PM.
The proposed changes in Bill 20 are a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It adds Emergency Leave provisions for workers into the Act (such as for self-isolation). It also affects group termination—when an employer wishes to terminate 25 or more employees at a time, they must give substantial notice. The change to the Act would add an exception clause that changes the notification period for circumstances outside the employer’s control to provide group termination notice, such as a public health emergency (among others).
