(YELLOWKNIFE) Friday, December 11, 2015 – The Members of the 18th Legislative Assembly will hold a roundtable discussion on Monday, December 14th at 9:00 am in the Chamber of the Legislative Assembly. This meeting marks the formal start of the priority setting process for the 18th Legislative Assembly.
In an important departure from past practice, this MLA roundtable discussion will be held in public and broadcast live on the Assembly’s television network and webcast via the Legislative Assembly website. Media and the public are welcome to observe the proceedings from the public gallery. In accordance with the recently adopted Process Convention on Priority Setting and Reporting, the priorities established by the Members of the 18th Assembly will provide the basis for a government mandate to be drafted by cabinet and adopted by the Legislative Assembly at its first major sitting in February, 2016. Each Member of the 18th Legislative Assembly will be provided an opportunity to express their views on what the priorities of the incoming government should be.
Monday’s public roundtable discussion will be informed by and build upon the feedback received by Members during their individual election campaigns, information received during the Members’ orientation program and a Northern Leaders’ roundtable discussion, to be held on Saturday, December 12th.
The Northern Leaders’ roundtable discussion will take place at the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre in Yellowknife. In addition to aboriginal and community government leaders, representatives of the NWT Native Women’s Association and the YWCA have been invited to provide their views on the challenges and opportunities facing the 18th Legislative Assembly and the people of the Northwest Territories.
Media are invited to interview participants of the Northern Leaders’ roundtable at the conclusion of the meeting at 4:00 pm on Saturday.
