Fred Carmichael Order of the Northwest Territories Induction Ceremony

(YELLOWKNIFE) Tuesday, October 10, 2017 – Paul Delorey, Chair of the Northwest Territories’ Honours Advisory Council, is pleased to announce the induction ceremony for Fred Carmichael of Inuvik. Mr. Carmichael was honoured with this award in March 2017, but was unable to attend the initial induction ceremony.

 

Mr. Carmichael was the first Aboriginal person from Canada’s Arctic region to obtain a commercial pilot’s license. His 60 year career in aviation set him apart as a valuable mentor, teacher and consultant and is recognized throughout the north as a leader and entrepreneur. He is a founding member of the Inuvik Aviation Council, lifetime member of the Northern Air Transport Association and served eight years as the Grand Chief of the Gwich’in Tribal Council and CEO of the Gwich’in Development Corporation. Mr. Carmichael is a Member of the Order of Canada, a recipient of the Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals and holds an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Saskatchewan. Mr. Carmichael has generously volunteered time, equipment and expertise to search for missing people and provide air services in desperate situations.

 

The Order of the Northwest Territories, established in 2013 by the Territorial Emblems and Honours Act, recognizes individuals who have served with the greatest distinction and excelled in any field of endeavour benefiting the people of the NWT or elsewhere. It is the highest honour awarded to NWT residents. A member of the Order can wear the insignia of the Order as a decoration and use the initials “O.N.W.T.” after his or her name. 

 

The Induction ceremony is being held on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 11:30 am in the Chamber of the Legislative Assembly. The Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, the Honourable Margaret Thom, will lead the ceremony in her role as Chancellor of the Order. 

 

The ceremony is open to the public and the media are welcome to attend.
