Legislative Assembly Announces Scholarship Recipients

YELLOWKNIFE (July 29, 2015) – The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, Honourable Jackie Jacobson, and the Yellowknife Community Foundation are pleased to announce the recipients of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly Scholarship.

Kathleen O’Brien, of Yellowknife, is currently enrolled at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she is a master’s candidate in the field of Political Science. Ms. O’Brien is involved in volunteering for a number of different organizations, including the Halifax International Security Organization and the Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative.

Karalyn Menicoche, of Fort Providence, will be returning for her second year at Carleton University where she is working towards a degree in Political Science with a communications minor. Ms. Menicoche volunteers with the local band office, helping to organize community social events, and works with the friendship center on their youth programs. Karalyn was also a NWT Ambassador at the North Star Gala in Ottawa during the Spectacular NWT days.

The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly scholarship is awarded annually and is intended to assist individuals pursuing post-secondary studies in political science or a related field.

“This scholarship is intended to support and encourage northern students in their post-secondary pursuits in government and politics, specifically in regards to government in the North. The two young ladies receiving the scholarship are a great asset to the North and I wish them all the best in the upcoming academic school year,” said Speaker Jacobson.

“We were delighted with the number and quality of the applicants for this Fund, and look forward to following the careers of Ms. O’ Brien and Ms. Menicoche,” said Bronwyn Watters, President of the Yellowknife Community Foundation.

The Yellowknife Community Foundation is the leading philanthropic organization in Yellowknife. A registered charity, the Foundation was formed in 1993 to provide residents (and former residents) with a means of supporting projects in our community for the enduring future. The Foundation is not singularly dedicated to any specific area of support. It embodies a simple concept – that people working together can make a difference.
