(YELLOWKNIFE) March 5, 2018 – Economic development and economic diversification are synonyms in the case of the NWT, where the central goal is reducing the heavy dependency on the mining sector by developing non-mining activities. Countries and regions that export highly sophisticated products can grow much faster than others with lower overall export quality. This economic complexity is related to capabilities available in a region.
Dr. Atif Kubursi will demonstrate how these economic factors affect development in the NWT during, Economic Development in the NWT and The Compact Product Space Theory, at Ledge Talks: The Knowledge Series on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at 7:00 PM in the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly building. He will discuss the two distinct measures of economic complexity, diversification and average ubiquity, or the average number of countries and regions exporting similar products.
Dr. Kubursi is Professor Emeritus at McMaster University and President of Econometric Research Limited. He has frequently lectured on globalization issues, economic development, oil and industrialization, impact of tourism on provincial and local economies, and on environmental-economy linkages. He joined the United Nations Industrial Organization as Senior Development Officer, and in 2006, he was appointed Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA).
There will be time for questions and discussion following the presentation. Media and the public are welcome.
