Ledge Talks: Many Ways to Lose a Billion

Ledge Talks: Many Ways to Lose a Billion

(YELLOWKNIFE) January 8, 2018 – Countries rich in oil, gas and minerals often fail to secure a fair share of their natural resource wealth. Revenue loss from the extractive sector is particularly significant for areas that depend on natural resource revenues for a substantial portion of their annual budgets.

Dr. Don Hubert will present the Many Ways to Lose a Billion – How Governments Fail to Secure a Fair Share of Resource Wealth at Ledge Talks: The Knowledge Series on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at 7:00 PM in the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly building.  He will discuss the different pathways through which governments lose revenue and illustrate them through real world case studies.

Dr. Hubert is founder and President of Resources for Development Consulting. His work seeks to assist resource-rich countries in securing a fair share of extractive sector wealth by analyzing contracts and fiscal regimes, modeling past and potential future government revenue, assessing vulnerability of tax evasion and identifying risks of corruption.

There will be time for questions and discussion following the presentation.  Media and the public are welcome.  The proceedings will be webcast via the Legislative Assembly website: www.assembly.gov.nt.ca

Ledge Talks: The Knowledge Series is a forum for a wide variety of speakers to present current ideas, science, traditional knowledge, and issues relevant to the Northwest Territories and beyond.  Ledge Talks will also showcase research done by the many GNWT employees who are making substantial contributions to the world’s understanding of the North.
