Legislative Assembly Establishes Special Committee on Transition Matters

YELLOWKNIFE (November 3, 2022) – A Special Committee on Transition Matters was established today by way of a Motion in the House.

The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly’s Process Convention on Priority Setting and Reporting calls for the establishment of a joint Special Committee on Transition Matters not less than four months before the dissolution of an Assembly. The purpose of this Special Committee is to make recommendations to the next Legislative Assembly on the transition process and the political structure of the 20th Legislative Assembly. The terms of reference for the Special Committee on Transition Matters can be found here.

This special committee is comprised of six Members of the Legislative Assembly, two selected from among Members of the Executive Council and four selected from among Regular Members. Members of the Committee are:

The Member for Hay River South, Rocky Simpson, Chair
The Member for Nahendeh, Shane Thompson
The Member for Hay River North, R.J. Simpson
The Member for Inuvik Twin Lakes, Lesa Semmler
The Member for Frame Lake, Kevin O’Reilly
The Member for Monfwi, Jane Weyallon Armstrong

“I look forward to working with my fellow Committee members to come up with recommendations for the 20th Legislative Assembly to consider. It is my hope that the Committee’s final report will ease the transition process by offering ways to refine Member orientation and priority setting,” says Rocky Simpson, Chair of the Special Committee.

The report of the Special Committee on Transition Matters will be tabled in the final sitting of the Assembly in August 2023.
