MLA Rylund Johnson Announces Picks for Premier and Cabinet
Putting transparency into practice
(YELLOWKNIFE – Wednesday, October 23, 2019)  - In a bid for greater transparency in the leadership selection process, Yellowknife North MLA Rylund Johnson announced his votes for Premier and Cabinet today.
The move comes ahead of tomorrow's vote for leadership as the territorial leadership committee process comes to a close.
“After input from my constituents, getting to an assembly full of fresh faces, and weighing it all against our territory’s biggest priorities, I have decided this is the best slate of candidates to represent our regions and our territory in leadership,” said Johnson.
He framed the decision to announce in terms of delivering on the change voters demanded in the election.
“We were presented with an overwhelming mandate for change, and I think step one is putting transparency into practice in our own decision-making,” he said.
Johnson stressed that whatever the result, he’s ready to work with whoever ends up in leadership.
“I’m bringing the voice of my constituents and the priorities they elected me on to this vote, as I will to the legislature over the next four years,” he said. “But that doesn’t mean I plan to move forward with anything but the spirit of consensus and collaboration with whomever ends up sitting on the other side of the house.
“Our constituents want us to get things done, and getting things done means working with whoever you need to deliver.”
Rylund didn’t put his own name forward for leadership, preferring to seek committee memberships to affect change in the territory’s economy, environment, and legislation in his first term.
