Legislative Assembly Twentieth Anniversary Celebrations
(YELLOWKNIFE) Thursday, October 17, 2013 – The Legislative Assembly building opened on November 17, 1993, and will celebrate its twentieth anniversary this year. To commemorate this event, the Legislative Assembly is hosting a public celebration in the Great Hall on Friday, November 1, 2013 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Legislative Assembly building is the most important symbol of public government in the Northwest Territories. Since opening twenty years ago, the building has functioned as a focal public institution. The Legislative Assembly would like to acknowledge the public’s contribution to the building through a public celebration.

The event will include the unveiling of design concepts for improvements to the Legislative Assembly precinct, the unveiling of portraits of former Premiers and Speakers, and a historical photo timeline. There will also be a panel discussion delivered by former Premiers, ceremonial drum prayers, and snacks and refreshments for all. Students from across the territory are being asked to submit letters or art to be placed inside a time capsule that will be buried on the legislative grounds next summer. Additionally, the building will be open to the public, including the Caucus Room and the Legislative Chamber.
