What is Youth Parliament?

It is an opportunity for grade 9 & 10 students in the Northwest Territories to assume the role of an MLA at the Legislative Assembly in Yellowknife. This will include researching community concerns, meeting with your MLA to discuss issues, writing a Member's or Minister's statement, thinking about and writing questions for Question Period, learning the process of making a bill into a law, and having lots of fun!

Each student will have transportation, meals, and accommodation provided.

Who can apply?

Every year, letters are sent to all Principals of High schools in the Northwest Territories. They are asked to help select grade 9-10 students in their school by providing them with the application information or by referring them to this website. All completed applications are considered and one student from each riding is selected to represent his or her Member of the Legislative Assembly. Any student in the NWT in grade 9 or 10 can apply. All expenses are paid and include; airfare, accommodation, meals, and any scheduled extracurricular activities. Additional money for shopping or free time will not be provided.

When is it?

Youth Parliament 2023 will take place April 16 - 21, 2023.

Where will it be held?

Youth Parliament is held in Yellowknife. All selected participants are put up at a local hotel with a chaperone, and two to three students per room. Males and females are separated. Each morning the chaperone drives the students to the Legislative Assembly building where the activities and training take place. Transportation will be arranged for any additional activities included in the programming.
